Giải Đề IELTS Writing Task 2 Ngày 24/8/2024 – Decreasing influence of advertising

Đề bài: The research indicates that nowadays some consumers are less influenced by advertising than in the past. What are the reasons and is it a positive or negative development?

BÀI LÀM

According to research, advertising has become less influential to consumers. This change can largely be attributed to the availability of alternative information sources and growing scepticism towards promotional content. In my view, this trend represents a positive development for both individuals and society.

One major reason for the declining influence of advertising is that consumers now have access to a wide range of independent sources of information. Online reviews on e-commerce platforms and user-generated content allow potential buyers to learn from the real experiences of previous customers. These reviews are often perceived as more authentic and reliable than advertisements, which are designed to persuade rather than inform. As a result, such honest feedback frequently exposes the exaggerated nature of advertising claims, making consumers more aware of the gap between promotion and reality. This, in turn, leads to a loss of trust in advertising, reducing its persuasive power.

This development can be considered positive for several reasons. On an individual level, consumers who are less influenced by advertising tend to be more aware and better informed when making purchasing decisions. Instead of buying products impulsively based on emotional appeal, they are more likely to compare prices, assess quality, and consider whether a product is genuinely necessary. On a broader level, this shift reflects a society that is increasingly cautious about consumerism. People are no longer blindly led by advertisements but approach consumption in a more rational and critical manner, which helps curb excessive and unnecessary spending.

In conclusion, although advertising plays a smaller role in shaping consumer behaviour than it once did, this change is largely beneficial. By encouraging informed decision-making and fostering a more thoughtful attitude towards consumption, this trend contributes to a healthier and more responsible consumer culture.
