A school of thought holds that English should be used as the primary language to deliver lessons at school, while others contend that knowledge is better explained in one’s first language. This essay will first examine both sides of the debate before concluding that I support the former view.
Admittedly, proponents of using students’ native language might argue that it allows students to fully understand the ideas and concepts that might otherwise be obscure or confusing if explained in another language, such as English. Theoretically, this could lead to more effective teaching, as students can grasp knowledge clearly without struggling to keep up. However, this viewpoint overlooks the fact that not every idea can be accurately translated into another language without losing some of its original meaning, which can lead to students developing a distorted understanding of concepts being taught.
Furthermore, there is a stronger case to be made for adopting English as the main instructional language at school. This approach helps foster English proficiency, which opens more chances for students to thrive in international environments once they enter the job market. Another compelling reason for using English to convey lessons at school is that it grants students direct access to a wider range of knowledge, given that the majority of academic and historical materials are originally written and stored in English. This enables them to keep up with global developments without relying on translations, which are often more limited and sometimes inaccurate.
In conclusion, while there are justifications for supporting teaching students in their mother tongue, the potential opportunities and wider access to knowledge tilt the balance in favour of using English as the medium of instruction at school.
