In the context of globalization, there is increasing advocacy for a unified legislative system across all nations, while others are still in favour of country-specific regulations. From my perspective, although the former may facilitate global fairness and simplify international procedures, the latter still plays a more crucial role in preserving diverse cultural values of each nation and safeguarding national security.
On the one hand, advocates of a single international legal framework emphasize global unity. Specifically, when this is implemented, people – regardless of physical and national borders – are treated equally according to a consistent legal standard. This ensures that every individual is granted basic human rights, which helps to combat discrimination among different communities, races, and nations. The implementation of a unified legal framework may also facilitate international trade when international corporations are no longer bound by complicated legal terms of the countries where they are based. This consequently minimises legal costs and risks when it comes to international operations.
On the flip side, I believe that it is impossible to establish legal consistency among nations. Each country has its own cultural and ethical values, and the reckless adoption of international laws may cause serious conflicts or worse, identity loss. For instance, in Asian communities that value traditional family structure, laws including marriage or inheritance need to reflect local cultural beliefs. Furthermore, laws are a part of national sovereignty, which has been enshrined in the UN charter, and universal treaties may be considered as an infringement. If all countries are obliged to conform to international laws, they could be subject to the influence of dominant powers, which may push them closer to a complete loss of sovereign rights.
In conclusion, the implementation of a global legal framework requires collective efforts from all nations, which seems both impossible and unrealistic. I still affirm that nations should have the freedom to establish their own regulations to better suit the context and ensure national autonomy.
